Like other micro Four-Thirds camera, Lumix GX-1 has 4/3 sensor with removable lens. This time Panasonic embedded 16 MP resolution CMOS sensor chip in the Lumix GX1, along with touch screen feature and video in MPEG-4 compression complete with stereo sound. As a kit lens, Lumix GX1 is equipped with Lumix 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS which there are two versions, regular version and X version. The difference is that the X lens version can be moved back and forth like pocket camera lens. But the X lens does not have ring for manual zoom, instead there is zoom lever available on the left side of the lens like regular pocket cameras.
Because it is classified as compact camera, Lumix GX1 does not provide an electronic viewfinder. If necessary, we can buy separate external viewfinder DMW-LVF2 mounted on hot shoe flash. Without the mirror (according to the meaning of the word 'mirrorless') then there is no fast auto focus as in DSLR camera, instead it is using contrast detection method to find the focus. Fortunately, Lumix GX1 has quite fast focus finder and almost approaching the performance of DSLR auto focus, which is about 0.1 seconds in enough light and 1 second time in low light.
There are various auto focus methodes such as face detection (detects up to 15 faces at once), AF tracking, 23-area, 1-area and pinpoint focus. We can also determine which one will be intended to be a focus by touching a point on the LCD screen, or we can shift indicator on the screen to manual focus.
With quite expensive price, Lumix GX1 looks more suitable for serious photographers who looking for a compact camera but do not compromise on performance, the image results and camera features. Unfortunately 3-inch LCD screen on this camera can not be folded or rotated.
