Nikon J1 and Nikon V1, Mirrorless Camera Series

Nikon 1 was launched to fill the gap between their Coolpix series and DSLR series. Nicon 1 camera series using new lens mount called CX mount, with 13.2 x 8.8mm sensor a.k.a 2.7 crop factor. As first step, Nikon has launched two types of this series those are Nikon C1 and Nikon J1, and also with several lens options such as Nikkonr 10-30mm VR (equivalent to 28-80mm), telephoto lens 30-110mm VR (equivalent to 80-300mm), 10mm fixed lens (equivalent to 27mm) and all-round lens 10-100mm VR (equivalent to 28-280mm).

Both cameras have had pretty good specs, especially in very fast auto focus performance by relying on hybrid AF, and combination of contrast detection and phase detection.

These features of Both Nikon J1 and Nikon V1:

Nikon J1

• 10 MP CMOS sensor
• 73 point AF
• Expeed 3 dual core processor 
• 3-inch screen, 461 k pixels
• There is manual mode and RAW (accessed via menu)
• 10 fps burst
• ISO 100-3200, can be upgraded to ISO 6400
• Flash with Guide Number 5
• Full HD video, stereo audio, H.264
• EN-EL20 battery, can be used to snap pictures up to 230 times

Nikon V1 just like J1 except:

• Wrapped with magnesium-alloy body
• 900k pixels screen resolution
• There is high resolution electronic viewfinder
• There is a mechanical shutter
• No built-in flash
• No input for stereo microphone
• EN-EL15 battery, can be used to snap pictures up to 400 times

Since there is no built-in flash on Nikon V1, Nikon has designed a new concept of an external flash without battery (so battery powered from the camera) named SB-N5 that mounted at accesory port (the flash is not compatible with hot shoe flash in other Nikon cameras). SB-N5 features LED light that can be used to add lighting when recording video.

Nikon remains targeting its DSLR for those who love photography to pro photographers. Nikon 1 is more positioned as point and shoot camera, which is used by family, in travel, for documentation, etc. but the camera do not sacrifice its quality and performance. Nikon 1 will be attractive options for those who do not want to have DSLR (probably because of its size or because they do not want to bother to choose lenses), for those who looking for a small camera that lens can be removed but the results still meet the standards, or for those who want to have a reliable camera for capturing photos and video.
